The Central Weather Administration has started using the automatic real-time CWASN since 1991. When a nearby earthquake is felt or a strong remote earthquake occurs, the seismic waveforms recorded at each station are transmitted through the dedicated line back to the Central Weather Administration in real-time. The epicenter is then instantly calculated by computer, as well as is the hypocenter and magnitude. Based on this seismic data, the Administration issues an earthquake report or strong remote earthquake news. Through mass media (various news media, broadcasting stations, and television stations), convenient telecommunication equipment (i.e., 166, 167 phonetic systems, SMS, facsimile) and the Internet (website and email), the general public will be informed about the earthquake information as soon as possible.
