The Central Weather Administration has completed the establishment of the real-time seismic network in Taiwan in 1994. This network includes the observation stations distributed over Taiwan as well as in Kinmen, Penghu, Lanyu, and Pengjiayu. The instruments installed in each of the real-time monitoring stations contain a three-component (vertical, north-south, and east-west) short-period seismograph. The ground motion signals recorded at these stations are digitally transmitted to the Central Weather Administration by leased line, and are stored for real-time processing, analyzing, and archiving. If the earthquake is felt, the operating personnel will immediately release an earthquake announcement. All real-time signals are displayed in the analog recorder at the center, and it is convenient for the staff to check whether or not the earthquake information automatically determined by the real-time processing is correct. The digital data will be filed manually to form a data bank, which will be advantageous for future inquires.

In addition to the setting up of the short-period seismograph, each station of the CWASN is also equipped with a switch-on strong motion seismograph. Each of the strong motion seismographs can be accessed by dial-up connection for inquiring about the intensity of the earthquake or checking the condition of the instrument.
